Rumah adat Selaso Jatuh Kembar merupakan rumah adat dari Provinsi Riau. Rumah adat Selaso Jatuh Kembar disebut juga Balai Salaso Jatuh Dikutip dari buku Mengenal Alam & Budaya Indonesia (2007) karya Ajen Dianawati, Rumah Melayu Selaso Jatuh Kembar merupakan tempat tinggal para datuk, atau pemangku adat.
Ruang pada rumah adat tersebut terdiri dari ruang besar yang digunakan untuk tempat tidur, ruang bersila, anjungan, dan dapur.
Tiang-tiang rumah, atap, loteng, tangga, dan alasnya semuanya berukir. Rumah adat tersebut juga dilengkapi dengan balai adat untuk pertemuan dan musyawarah adat.
Bentuk rumah adat Selaso Jatuh Kembar berbentuk panggung serta memiliki tinggi sekitar 1 hingga 2,5 meter.
Dikutip dari buku Mengenal Rancang Bangun Rumat Adat di Indonesia (2017) karya Faris Al Faisal, rumah adat Riau dinamakan Selaso Jatuh Kembar karena memiliki selasar (selaso) yang lebih rendah (turun) dibandingkan dengan ruang tengah.
Secara keseluruhan, rumah adat Riau ini dibuat dari bahan alam. Di mana atapnya terbuat dari daun rumbiat yang diikat menggunakan rotan pada tulang atap.
Sementara bagian lainnya seperti dinding, tiang, atau lantai terbuat dari kayu-kayu kualitas terbaik semacam kayu meranti, kayu punak, atau kayu menang.
Rumah adat Selaso jatuh kembar tidak digunakan sebagai desain rumah tinggal. Di mana dulu rumah adat Riau difungsikan sebagai balai pertemuan adat.
Rumah Salaso Jatuh Kembar dihiasi dengan banyak ukiran yang berbeda-beda, sehingga tampak bagus.
Pada bagian tangganya terdapat ukiran lebah bergantung atau ombak-ombak, di mana ombak-ombak tersebut memiliki makna agar semua orang bisa hidup seperti lebah yang bermanfaat bagi orang lain.
Pada bagian atas pintu dan jendela, terdapat ukiran awan larat yang artinya kemudahan rejeki yang bisa datang darimana saja.
Pada bagian dinding terdapat ukiran itik sekawan (itik yang berbaris berjalan beriringan) yang memiliki makna agar manusia bisa hidup selaras, berdampingan, damai, kompak, dan bersama-sama.
Bahkan di kisi-kisi jendela dan pintu ada ukiran semut beriringan, di mana terinspirasi dari cara berjalan semut. Ukiran itu memiliki makna agar manusia bisa mengikuti sifat semut yang rukun, tolong menolong, dan rajin.
Ada juga ukiran yang dinamakan Pucuk rebung Kalok Paku di bagian yang memanjang dan melengkung. Ukiran tersebut sebagai simbol agar warga selalu bergotong royong dan saling membantu.
Kemudian ada juga ukiran yang disebut Pucuk Rebung Bertuna pada bagian ujung atas dan bawah tiang. Ukuran itu memiliki makna bahwa setiap masalah akan memiliki penyelesaian.
Pada cucuran atap ada bagian khusus yang menyerupai sayap dan punya ukiran yang disebut sayap layangan atau saya layang-layang.
Pada bagian langit-langit dan ventilasi rumah ada ukiran menyerupai bunga manggis. Kemudian di bagian puncak yang dinamakan selembayung atau sulobuyung. (*)
