Sepanjang perjalan arak-arakan replika tongkang disesaki puluhan ribu warga Tionghoa baik dari Rokan Hilir, berbagai daerah di Indonesia hingga dari mancanegara. Mereka mengikuti ritual itu dengan memegangi dupa.
Ritual Bakar Tongkang bertujuan untuk mengenang para leluhur orang Tionghoa dalam menemukan Bagansiapiapi dan sebagai wujud syukur kepada Dewa Ki Hu Ong Ya. Ritual ini diadakan tanggal 16 bulan kelima penanggalan Lunar (Imlek) setiap tahunnya.
Bupati Rokan Hilir Suyatno mengataka “Kini Rohil kembali mencatat sejarah, karena apa yang digelar hari ini merupakan Iven Wisata Nasional peringkat 10 di Indonesia yang disaksikan 30 hingga 40 ribu wisatawan,” kata Suyatno.
Menurutnya, Iven Wisata Nasional Bakar Tongkang yang digelar setiap tahunnya ini merupakan salah satu aset budaya yang ada di Provinsi Riau, khususnya di Kabupaten Rokan Hilir.
“Iven seperti ini bukan lagi skala nasional, bahkan dunia. Karena Ritual Bakar Tongkang cuma ada di Rokan Hilir,” kata Bupati.
Ia juga menyampaikan ucapan terima kasih kepada seluruh jajaran panitia dan semua yang hadir pada acara yang berlangsung sukses dan lancar.
Asal mula ritual bakar tongkang, berawal dari berangkatnya beberapa keluarga dari daratan China untuk mencari tempat kehidupan yang baru. Pada saat itu beberapa keluarga ini merantau dengan mengunakan kapal kayu dan sampailah mereka disuatu tempat (Bagan) lalu mereka melihat adanya cahaya dan kemudian tanpa berfikir panjang, mereka langsung bergegas menuju asal cahaya tersebut yang ternyata adalah kumpulan kunang-kunang (binatang bercahaya saat malam hari) di atas tempat penampungan ikan (Bagan).
Setelah beberapa lama berada di tempat tersebut, para perantau asal China ini merasa bahwa tempat itu adalah tempat yang sangat nyaman bagi mereka tinggali.Sehingga para perantau membakar kapal mereka sebagai tradisi atau simbol tidak akan kembali serta sebagai bentuk sesajen atau ritual bagi dewa mereka yang telah memberikan tempat kehidupan baru.
Sampai saat ini, ritual tersebut tetap mereka laksanakan sebagai mengenang nenek moyang mereka yang telah membawa mereka ke daerah ini (Bagansiapiapi). Setiap tahunya, ribuan masyarakat etnis Tionghoa berbondong-bondong mengikuti acara bakar tongkang.
