Jakarta – Dua maskapai penerbangan Amerika serikat (AS) mengumumkan akan melakukan Pemutusan Hubungan Kerja (PHK) terhadap 32 ribu pekerja pada Oktober 2020 ini.
Maskapai pertama, American Airlines Inc. Maskapai penerbangan terbesar di Negeri Paman Sam ini akan melakukan PHK ke 19 ribu pekerja mulai bulan ini.
Kedua, United Airlines. Maskapai penerbangan yang merupakan anak usaha United Continental Holdings akan mulai melakukan PHK ke 13 ribu pekerja pada bulan ini juga.
Kedua maskapai berdalih PHK dilakukan setelah kesepakatan stimulus dari pemerintah AS berakhir pada September lalu.
Sebelumnya, American Airlines Inc mendapat stimulus dari Presiden AS Donald Trump. Syaratnya, maskapai tidak memberhentikan pekerja walau tengah tertekan pandemi virus corona atau covid-19 setidaknya sampai September 2020.
Namun selepas September, perusahaan berencana melakukan PHK. Hal ini juga dipengaruhi oleh gagalnya kesepakatan bantuan baru dari pemerintah AS untuk pelaku industri penerbangan usai pemberian stimulus sebelumnya.
“Pejabat terpilih kami belum dapat mencapai kesepakatan tentang paket bantuan covid-19. Akibatnya, besok (mulai Oktober 2020), kami akan memulai proses sulit untuk memutus 19 ribu rekan kerja yang sudah bekerja keras dan berdedikasi untuk kami,” kata CEO American Airlines Doug Parker, seperti dikutip dari AFP, Kamis (1/10).
Kendati begitu, ia mengatakan potensi pembatalan PHK masih terbuka bila ada kesepakatan bantuan baru dari pemerintah AS. Bahkan, pekerja yang sudah terlanjur di-PHK bisa dipekerjakan lagi.
Hal sama juga disampaikan United Airlines. Mereka menyatakan tetap membuka opsi rekrutmen kembali bagi para pekerja yang di-PHK bila ada kesepakatan bantuan dari pemerintah AS.
Pandemi covid-19 telah menekan berbagai sektor bisnis di dunia, termasuk salah satu yang terparah industri penerbangan. Tekanan terjadi karena mobilitas masyarakat terhenti dan aksi korporasi harus ditunda secara drastis pada tahun ini.
Pemerintah AS sebenarnya sudah berusaha menolong industri ini dengan menggelontorkan stimulus. Maskapai juga sudah mencapai kesepakatan dengan serikat pekerja untuk memberlakukan cuti tidak dibayar dan paket pensiun dini untuk menghindari PHK.
Sayangnya, keputusan itu belum cukup untuk mencegah PHK. Para maskapai pun pesimis dengan pemulihan ekonomi ke depan selama vaksin belum ditemukan.
Sementaradata serikat pekerja AS mencatat setidaknya ada 100 ribu orang yang terkena PHK tanpa bantuan dari pemerintah.(CNN Indonesia.com)
